Enjoying healthy, locally grown food is possible even in the wintertime with Winter Sun Farms, a program of Blue Ridge Food Ventures in Asheville NC. Once a month from December through March, members of this Community Supported Agriculture program (CSA) receive fruits and vegetables from local farms, frozen at the peak of freshness.

Winter Sun Farms is good for consumers – and for local farmers.
The concept behind Winter Sun Farms is simple: Consumers purchase “winter shares” from Blue Ridge Food Ventures in advance of the growing season. The money is used to help area food growers purchase seeds and get their crops in the ground. Some farmers are certified organic; some are certified naturally grown. All of them grow sustainably and responsibly – and members of Winter Sun Farms can feel good about helping these local farmers stay in business.
We process and store the produce – you just enjoy!
During harvest time, we get the fresh-picked produce from our farmers and process and store it at our Blue Ridge Food Ventures commercial kitchen. Each winter month, members pick up their winter share – a box of at least 6 items. Because we work with small local farms, quantities and types of vegetables and fruits will vary at each pickup.
With Winter Sun Farms, you know where your food was grown.
Winter Sun Farms enables Western North Carolina consumers to be environmentally conscious and community-minded with their food purchasing. Winter Sun Farms members know exactly where their food comes from: the name of the local grower is on every package.

The Winter Sun Farms CSA works because it involves local people who care about healthy food and healthy farms. As North Carolina’s first food business incubator, Blue Ridge Food Ventures is developing Winter Sun Farms to help us fulfill our mission of creating food based businesses and a local, fair and sustainable food system. WNC farmers have the opportunity to grow for a committed market and sell produce at harvest for a fair price.
